Leading Through The Gray
Leading Through the Gray: Case Studies in Judgment and Fairness
The Trusted Driver Marcus is a dependable, experienced employee with an accident-free record and strong customer feedback. He is especially important to his short-staffed branch, where he frequently covers additional routes. Recently, vehicle-monitoring data recorded repeated hard braking, several speeding incidents, and one mobile-phone event while his vehicle was moving. Marcus disputes the data’s context, explaining that traffic conditions caused the hard braking and that the phone use was work-related. He also raises concerns about privacy and how the monitoring data is being used. His manager must decide whether to formally escalate the issue—which could temporarily remove Marcus from driving and disrupt service—or pursue another response that balances safety, fairness, consistency, and operational needs.
Small Group Reflection and Discussion 1. Clarify: What facts are known, disputed, or still missing? 2. Lenses: Which lens is most likely to dominate? Which is being underweighted? 3. Action: What should the manager do next, and who should be involved?
The Golden Child Riley consistently exceeds performance goals, manages several high-value accounts, and is often praised by senior leaders for delivering results under pressure. At the same time, Riley frequently interrupts colleagues, dismisses their ideas, and uses a sharp or disrespectful tone during team meetings. Several employees now contribute less in meetings, and one has privately told the manager that speaking up no longer feels worthwhile. Riley’s manager has offered informal reminders about teamwork but has avoided a direct conversation, partly because the department is under pressure to meet ambitious targets and relies heavily on Riley’s performance. The manager must decide how to address Riley’s conduct while protecting results, rebuilding trust within the team, and demonstrating that strong performance does not excuse behavior that undermines others.
